π Away day. π Whitchurch v Ferndale, Cardiff Cup.
Last time we met was at the Pencoed festival, where both teams failed to score in a fierce battle, so we knew today would be a great match for any neutral to watch.
Our Warriors started strong and Ferndale kept the defence tight. We visited their 22 at least four times in the opening twenty minutes, but we were unable to turn that pressure into points and Ferndale kept the doors shut tight.
Then came Ferndale's turn to bring the pressure, but they also could not get over the white line, with some brilliant defensive work by Whitchurch. When a penalty was given, Ferndale took the opportunity to get three points on the board and headed into the lead.
Ferndale took that lead into half time at 3-0. The second half was more of the same. Both teams had strong runners but the defence was stronger, until eventually Charlie Donovan managed to break through and get the first try of the game.
Five minutes later Ferndale responded after one too many penalties from Whitchurch, and the kick over the posts took the score to 10-5, followed by another try ten minutes later leaving it at 15-5 with not long to go.
Whitchurch again piled on the pressure but just could not convert it to points. Time and time again we gave up possession or territory with silly mistakes, but Jackson Hughes stepped up and gave us hope, getting a try in the corner with only five minutes left.
Unfortunately it was not our day. We know we left too many points out on that pitch, but the boys did not give up and pushed right to the end.
Some great tries and great defence shown by both teams all game. It was a real battle, played in the right spirit, and a great representation of grassroots rugby in South Wales.
Good luck to Ferndale in their last cup game against Merthyr, and thanks for having us up the club for a great boat race and buffet. πΊππ°

Like against Merthyr, we could have and should have won, but I guess that is the journey we are on. Every single player tackled, jackaled and ran hard.
Every single player could have had a mention, for scoring tries or for massive tackles. It was a brilliant game of rugby that unfortunately slipped away from us. π’
Lastly, a massive thank you to those who came and supported. It is great to see a big crowd on the side, especially coming to a fixture away in Ferndale, which is not just around the corner. β€οΈ
Both picked by the Ferndale coaches.
The Ferndale coaches said he was superb in attack and defence, and a real threat every time he was near the breakdown or with the ball in hand.
The Ferndale coaches said his control and distribution was superb, with an excellent kicking game, especially out of his hands.
Both awards came from the Ferndale coaching staff rather than our own. Getting your man of the match chosen by the side you have just played is about as good a compliment as the game offers.
Every score, as it happened. Whitchurch first.
