Nineteen points down, fourteen points up, and beaten by an intercept with the last play of the game.
Five tries earned the try scoring bonus point, and losing by three earned the losing bonus point. Two out of a possible five from the first cup game, and a lot to build on.

💥 Cup Day 💥 Heartbreak at the swamp. 💔
Team selected, players ready, and the coaches seemed the most nervous. 😬 Any neutral watching was going to be treated to a great game of rugby in perfect conditions.
Our Warriors started well and looked up for it from the off, with strong defence and great line speed and pressure from the get go.
Unfortunately though, the Warriors switched off and must have been thinking about what meat was going to be on their Sunday dinner, because Merthyr struck first and our defence just disappeared like a magician's special coin. 🪙
Merthyr struck first, then second, and for a third time before our Warriors even realised it. Our defence left gaps open and Merthyr capitalised well and deserved every try.
The Warriors then switched on, we turned the heat up, and the comeback was on. 💪
First up a try for Ben, which was exactly what we needed, and the tails went up with Whitchurch starting to dominate. Whitchurch's second try came from Luca, and further tries from Khadr and Tolis gave Whitchurch the lead at 33-19. It was well deserved.
The game was a massive tug of war, and it was Merthyr's turn to take the momentum. They managed to claw the game back to 33-29 and, in the last play of the game, intercepted a pass in their 22 and ran the whole pitch to score and take the win. 😩 As a coach watching from our try line I almost ran on the pitch and tackled him myself to avoid the heartbreak. 💔
It could have gone to either team on the day. The Warriors are gutted, but we pick ourselves up and get ready to go again next week. Some great defence on display, with massive tackles coming from all across the team.
Massive well done to all of the boys today. 💪
Two bonus points today, one for four tries and one for losing within seven points. It would have been amazing to get all five, but the boys did amazing and should be proud to take Merthyr that far and get those two points.

There was a big shift from our whole pack today, but the dog work put in by Charlie was outstanding. All over the pitch in both defence and attack, often leading the charge and leading by example. On a few occasions he ignored the funny business that comes with rugby and made sure he was focused on the job, and he saved us more than once. Mean machine in all the right ways today. ⚙️
A ropey first ten minutes from him and the team, but he settled quickly. Jay started controlling the game with some superb kicking out of hand, pinning the opposition in the corner on a few occasions while picking some brilliant passes out in the back line. Four from five conversions on the day sealed a strong performance from the Captain. 🫡
Every score, as it happened. Whitchurch first.
